Greetings from Ballina!
There’s a lot of big things in Australia and the prawn behind us is no exception! But, this is a story in two parts. The head was built in 1989 and placed atop a service station. There it sat for 20 years until the service station closed down and the local council voted for its demolition. Well, there was uproar in the community to save the icon that commemorated the local prawning industry and thousands of signatures were collected.
When multi-national hardware store Bunnings bought the site they listened. They spent nearly half a million hoisting the ol’ prawn head up on supports and building tail. Complete with a fresh coat of paint the prawn now stands as the jewel of Ballina!
Can you believe Willow isn’t a fan of prawns? Nor when we woke her up from her afternoon nap to take this photo!
